If they get an account on the private sites then sure - they just read off the IPs connecting to them in the client. Newsgroups - they would need to get a court order for the server logs.

Here is the usage policy from Giaganews.

Usage Information
Giganews monitors our servers to the extent necessary to ensure that high standards of maintenance are met. Giganews does not monitor or record your activities online. We do not monitor which newsgroups you post to or download from or what you put in news articles that you post.

So if that is true you are quite safe using them.

It is more of a half-truth. All newsgroup providers keep extensive logs to protect themselves but they would only go through them for cases of ppl uploading kiddie porn and the like.

Since the BPI and such would have to get a court order and most news providers are overseas it is much easier to log the IPs off torrent users and go via the ISP. Maybe if they ever beat torrents then usenet will be next but it is okay for now. Like when torrents were only of interest when napster and kazzza went down.

ok so newsgroups are fine.how bout the private trackers like leechers.i like this site very much and would like to stay with it but if theres a chance of gettingtarcked then i`d leave it.

the reasons i ask is because i had the letter from bpi through my isp and just want to make sure.i did leave a post in another section but didn`t get a reply there.there was a sample file of a torrent that i`d dl`ed using piratebay.org although i`m 100% sure i got this file from demonoid as i`ve never used piratebay before.

Well load a file from a private torrent up and then click on "peers" - if you can see the IP addys of all the ppl connected to you then so can anyone registered at that site.
