is the socket in question on the ring main ? (2 cables in it in most cases)

even if it is just a spur, you are planning to just put in like a 3amp switch fused spur so will be no bother.

Has said above check the socket you intend to spur off and make sure its on the ring, turn power off to sockets open the socket up and see how many red (brown if rewired within last few years) they are connected to the live terminal, if there's 1 then the socket is more then likely to already be a spur off, if there's 2 which is most common then good chance its a ring , and if there's 3 red wires in the live then its more then likely the socket is on the ring main but already has a spur off.
The easiest way to check the above involves disconnecting the wires out of the live terminal and testing with a voltage meter, if you have 2 red wires and both are live when they are seperated then you have a ring main but if only one is live then you dont, be very very carefull testing live do this at your own risk touch the live wires can kill and keep the wires away from the earth box, if you are intending to fit a 3 amp fuse then i cant see any problem doing this even if its not a ringmain but without looking at all your socket power demands i cant verify this.
