Just seems weird, that EVERY rad is cold...

it sounds like you have an air lock somewhere mate.
do you have any drain cocks anywhere? possibly coming through an air brick at the front or back of your house??

Kind of sorted it, got most of the rads working again, apart from the 2 in question again, but the reset button on the bolier keeps tripping

Any ideas?

Is it best to drain the system, turn off all valves and fill each one in turn?

Thanks

not really, it sounds like you do have an air lock or bad system sludge which is blocking off some of the rads, as you said before when you turned off the other rads and just left the two open you got heat through the one. then once you had finished you couldn't get heat anywhere, so it may be that you dislodged some gunk in the system and blocked off some of the pipes.

how old is the sytem mate?

ah, just thought of something. can you tell if the boiler pump is running mate?
as if the pump has failed then that could be the reason that the system isn't circulating, and why the overheat button keeps going.??

The pump is running, have 3 cold rads now, think I may have blocked pipes

Whats the best way of cleaning them?

How do I get cleaner in ther system?

there is something called sentinel cleanser and sludge remover which can do the trick, ( i am going into plumb center tmrw so will get some info and prices for you and let you know)
the other alternative is to have the system flushed by a proffesional company. can be quite dear but will definately work.

let me do a bit of research tmrw and i'll let you know.

Drained the system off this morning, and got a load of hard black crap out of it, repressurised and filled each rad in turn

Still got 3 cold rads. 2 upstairs and one downstairs.

The pipe for the one downstairs is in parallel with another rad which is fine. (The TCV pipe is hot and the other cold). This then goes upstairs & I would assume that it tees off to each of the cold rads upstairs. one rad has two cold pipes, the other one has one cold one and the TCV pipe is hot.

what rad valves do you have mate? any chance of a pic? sometimes you have a problem with the valve stem sticking in the closed position. although it sounds like a problem with sludge/sediment build up, i've been into plumb center this morning and the best thing for the job is sentinel x400 sludge remover.
product code; 608106
you will also need some inhibitor
product code: 608100

then what you need to do is isolate one of the rads and drain the rad, remove the air vent plug and using a funnel ad the x400, replace the air vent plug and slowly fill the rad up with water so that you remove all the air, then open the valves fully on every rad and turn the heating on permenantly (read the instructions as i think you may need to turn the boiler control stat down slightly to 60/70 degrees.

then you leave it running continually for at least 2 days. then turn off boiler and drain the system, as you wont have a flushing unit then you will need to fill and drain the system a good couple of times (untill the water comes out clear), running the heating for about 10 mins once full to circulate the water. once you have managed to flush the system and the drained water runs clear. you can then refill the system and heat test. make sure all rad valves are open and run the heating, you will generally find that the upstairs rads get hot first then slowly the downstairs ones. you will then need to balance the system using the lockshield valves on each rad leaving the thermostatics set the same.
once you have balanced the system you then need to turn off and isolate on of the rads again and drain off some of the water in that rad. add the x100 inhibitor and again slowly fill back up with water to remove any air. once this is done you can open tha rad back up and run the heating to circulate the ihibitor.
once this is done hopefully all the rads should be working correctly and you can stand back and admire your work Very Happy

Sorted, was all of the TCVs on the cold rads

Gave them a squirt of WD40 and worked it back and forth and was OK
