Joss Bay Caves, Explore 13/02/07
Decided one day to join the local library for the purpose of researching caves and tunnels around the Thanet coast so my resident guide Beachcomber took me up to the library in Broadstairs and said she'd show me some caves nearby at Joss Bay, so we hopped on a bus, done the necessary at the library and headed for the beach.
Nice walk along a deserted beach on a sunny day has to be good for you, especially with the promise of some caves to explore at the end of it
Cliffs look awesome from the beach, couple of shots below of some buildings still clinging to the cliff tops, there's is loads of brick rubble littering the beach in places where buildings have collapsed into the sea.
There are a few of these doors along the beach between Broadstairs & Joss Bay, this one is padlocked from the inside which is kind of intriguing.
A sign by the side of an open doorway translates as 'Come and take a look round S'
The entrance, the bannister is really rotten and the steps are only brick built up to the wooden lintel over the tunnel then the steps change to railway sleepers
There is a shaft going to the surface at the top of those steps to let in light
2nd flight of stairs are very very dodgy, the sleepers feel like sponge underfoot
Unfortunately the sign was still valid and apart from being dangerous the bloody gate was locked
Oh well back to the walk..... Finally, Joss Bay in the distance. Well all this walking makes me thirsty so a quick visit to the Captain Digby pub was needed before we could continue
A view of North Foreland Estate at the top of the cliffs
And one from the bottom of the cliffs
Finally a cave I can crawl about in you can see how big this bugger is as Beachcomber takes a peak inside
Aha, I spotted an offshoot with light at the end so decided to take a peek, very slippery climb up seeweed covered chalk
Looking back down at a bemused Beachcomber
Bit of a crawl and I can see the beach
Good job I didn't jump out it was about 15ft off the beach
Onward and upward, this was also very slippery (mental note to self don't go caving in Converse) so I went up alone
I couldn't go any further as I didn't have a torch, we were only supposed to be looking at the caves but they're sooo tempting
You can see the crap falling as I lit up these two shots with the flash it scared the fcuk outta the resident flying vermin population lmao, never seen Beachcomber duck so fast
Through the arch on the way to the 'Seven Sisters' caves
Seven Sisters, in the 1st pic you can make out where one of the 'windows' has collapsed (far right)
Another come on in sign
The entrance but not today though just wasn't equipped
I'll be back to do the Seven Sisters in the very near future. Not much of an explore but knackering and good fun
