When i am putting songs onto my ipod do i need to put them onto my laptop or can i just send the album to the ipod? I only have a smallish hard drive in the laptop and i will be putting the album onto the ipod via a cd. I just don't want to lose anymore memory on the laptop having to store whats on my ipod, thanks _________________ ANY BACKUPS OBTAINED FROM ME IS ON THE UNDERSTANDING YOU OWN THE ORIGINAL

iTunes works by building a collection of music onto your hard drive and then syncing it with your iPod. The main collection is designed to always stay on your computer though.
What you'd need to do is set your iPod to 'manually manage music' and then after you've dragged your songs onto the iPod you can then delete them from iTunes _________________ Smug Mac Owner
Thanks for the reply so once i have done that when i reconnect the ipod back to get more music i won't lose it on my ipod? Would an external usb hard drive work and store it on a library in that be better or the way you have just said? I use an external Hard drive to store my iTunes library rather than on the drive inside the computer. That would be the better solution i think as you always have access to your music in case you drop your iPod in the bath
If your iPod is set to manually manage music then you won't lose music from it unless you specifically delete it _________________ Smug Mac Owner

Install it on your laptop as normal, but then go into preferences and change the folder that the songs are stored onto so that it stores them on your external. _________________ Smug Mac Owner
Ok one last question, i have loaded the songs onto itunes with my external hard drive but the songs in the library have been duplicated twice, any idea how i get rid of the dups instead of manually deleting them one by one? on the mac version there is an option to view duplicates, from there you can manually delete the extras, i am sure it will be the same on the pc version so there is that option.
i am sure there must be programs that do this also and i have no doubt a google will find them or perhaps one of the guys here will help out with a name _________________
