Internal wall

I want to put up an internal wall, but fancy using the metal framework that the shopfitters used where I work.
Have checked the local diy stores, Wickes, Jewsons & Screwfix etc but can't find what I want.
Not even sure I know what it's called, been asking and searching online for 'metal stud walling'

I really can't be asked to use the normal 2" x 2" timber malarky, this other stuff looks a piece of pi$$

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a look at some, so I can price it up. Or, tell me I've imagined it all and have stumbled on a niche in the market Very Happy

TIA

Shep

It certainly is - cheers m8 Very Happy
I assume it's only british gypsum that supplies it though - I'll have to give them a call.
It looks such an easy job using that stuff, I'm itching to get started!

Thanks Again

no problem, i think most places supply it, if you phone a local supplier and ask for some metal framework for stud walls they'll know what your after, think it comes in varying sizes but if you alow for a double skimmed 12mm plaster board either side, then a 50 metalk frame you will have roughly a standard 4" internal wall.

hope this helps

Hi shepard.

hope not to late to reply to this..

But as lee said all is correct.

one supplier i use myself is

http://www.ccfltd.co.uk/

nationwide branches, one tip thou is dont by britsh gypsum from them they do there own brand of metal studwork which is a damm lot cheaper and is exactly the same thing.

for a standard internal wall all you really need is 72mm track (ie top and bottom same stuff for top or bottom) so just order the amount you need by lenght of wall x2 of course. then 50mm stud (ie the uprights) each stud should be placed at approx 400mm centers so if 2 meter wall 6 studs should be plenty. etc etc. The stus are sold in lots of diffrent lengths up to 4meters so be sure what lengths you need as could save a few quid in getting 2 uprights out of one purchased length..

Of course dont forget the wall will only be soundproof by the 2 plasterboarsds each side so is advisable to get some soundproofing between the boards you can use normal loft insulation if you like or you can buy it in packs whish are cut to 400mm ceters so it just drops in place .(ps wear gloves that stuff itches like crazy)

Two tipsis dont forget to place some noggins here and there in the wall (can use 2x1 timber or cut off sections of metal stud to support any shelves etc etc that you may want to hang on the wall after its completed.otherwise you will have to use plasterboard fixings etc that are never as good for any real weight as a normal screw.

Other tip is if the wall has a door going into it use a normal doorframe but to fix it to the studs place a piece of 2x1 timber down each length of stud that will give you a nice strong fixing to screw doorframe against.

ps..

if the link above is no good you can always get the studs etc at www.travisperkins.co.uk but there a bit pricey.

Thanks Tusk, and no it's not too late Cheesy Grin

I didn't have any luck in my last trip out and haven't had a day off on my own since my last post. Don't fancy going DIY shopping with a 6 year old whingeing away!

I have a Travis Perkins about 5 miles away from me, forgot all about them.

Thanks again to you both, you never know ... it may get done before Christmas Cheesy Grin

Regards

Shep

P.S. Wondered why an older thread had suddenly got a reply - just found the new section - nice one STeALtH
