It is possible to cancel, even with bids on it. I did it once because I had put the same item in twice by mistake, but I did inform the bidders who then bid on the other one.
have you tried ringing him?

if there is no bids on the item the seller can remove the item, but as far as i am aware now i could be wrong if 1 bid is placed he is not allowed to end the auction and is against ebay rules?? maybe someone will say i am wrong but i am pretty sure thats the case!! if i was u bud let eBay know of your frustration and see what happens?

all the best with this mate

the reason why i only put a fiver on is that others that i was watching got suddenley cancelled

i thought if a bid was placed it couldnt be retracted

but where does that leave me i was willing to go to £50

will ebay just give him a tap on the wrist or what

The rule is that you can't cancel the auction if it is less than 12 hours before the end.

It is a just rule as there are legit reasons to cancel an auction - like if an item is lost, damaged, etc - and of course this gets abused but there is no way for ebay to prove otherwise.

Remember - legally they are not officially auctions.

A buyer can retract a bid if he claims it was made in error - although the number of retractions shows on your profile.

i,ve ended a auction before ,but here is a note of ebay stating the rules

Ending Your Listing Early

If you cannot complete your listing as planned, you can end your listing via the End My Listing Early Form. Remember to select "Cancel bids and end the listing early". All bids will be cancelled automatically and the bidders informed. Valid reasons for ending a listing early include:

You accidentally listed the same item more than once. Please note that Insertion Fees are generally non-refundable. However, if you accidentally listed the same item twice, please ask if we can make an exception.

You made an error in the starting price or reserve amount.

You made an error in the listing that you couldn't correct. Please note that Insertion Fees are generally non-refundable so you should try to Edit Your Listing instead of closing it early.

You lost or broke the item.

Items have been listed on your account without your consent. See Account Theft for more information.

We strongly discourage sellers to end listings early because it undermines the trust buyers have in the eBay platform. eBay buyers are told that their bids are binding. Equally, buyers expect the auctions they bid on to conclude successfully.

Ending a listing early for the following reasons is prohibited as it is considered fee avoidance:

Cancelling bids and ending a listing early because the reserve price hasn't been met to avoid reserve fees. See Reserve Price Policy.

Cancelling bids and ending a listing early in order to sell the item off-eBay. You should be aware that as well as avoiding fees, you risk fraud by selling items off the eBay website. If a member writes to you to ask you to sell away from the eBay website, please report them to us.

Note: It is acceptable for sellers to end a listing early and sell an item to the highest bidder at their current bid price. Bidders are permitted to contact sellers with requests to end a listing early for this reason; however, sellers are under no obligation to do so. To end a listing and sell to the current high bidder (at their current high bid), go to the End My Listing Early form and select "Sell to the high bidder".

You can't end a listing less than 12 hours before the end of the listing if the item has a winning bid:

You may cancel bids, but not end the item unless you are selling the item to the high bidder. To do this, go to the End My Listing Early form and select "Sell to the high bidder".

You can't add to or change the item description.

If the item becomes unavailable during the last 12 hours of the auction (for example, you break it) you must contact the high bidder or buyer and explain what happened. You can get a Final Value Fee Credit if you and the buyer must confirm you mutually agreed to withdraw from the purchase.
