help needed with installing o/s on laptop

i have a medion lappy which had media centre installed and the hdd went pete tong on, i have today fitted a new drive and tried to install xp as this is the only o/s i have lying around but because the drive is sata it doesnt recognise it, I have had a scout around google and all i can find is a bit about creating a floppy for teh sata drivers but yes you guessed right, being only 12 months old the lappy doesnt have a fdd, I know i could install vista with no problems as it has sata support but i rather wouldnt to be honest as i dont like it

any ideas please??

go into the bios and look for under Config and Sata...change it from ADHI or something similar to that and change it to compatibility mode
